MEET THE HABITS Emerging from Byron Bay’s burgeoning live music scene, The Habits are a new musical project you won’t want to kick. While only formed in 2012, the quartet benefit from their members’ years of experience playing with some of the country’s most dynamic acts – Tim Freedman of The Whitlams, Darren Seltmann of The Avalanches, festival stalwarts Marshall and The Fro, former Sony signees Kurtis and The Element, and Australian Ska heavyweights The Kamikazi Thunderkats. This sound foundation, (bassist Nick Fitzpatrick, drummer Ben Cox, and lead guitarist Sam Shine) lays the framework for vocalist Dan Clark – an emerging talent in his own right – to create soundscapes and push boundaries with an indie-rock slant. “Byron Bay is great for us,” Clark concedes. “There’s a huge acceptance of live and original music, from the pub circuit to the busking scene. It’s going to be a great place for us to launch our career.” The band are in the throes of putting together their first release, aimed at the beginning of 2013. Given their well-established versatility, it’s hard to know exactly what to expect – with one caveat: whatever it is, it’s going to be good.
